American demand for shrimp is far beyond the current American shrimp farming capabilities. The alternative, wild caught shrimp from domestic fisheries are not able to meet the need. Beyond America problems abound and in reality shrimp farming methods are failing (see Shrimp Industry – Environment Issues Tab), it is just a matter of time. Traditional techniques are imbued with mitigating factors including geographic and climatic conditions, water pollution, pond contamination, and most importantly disease caused by assorted shrimp pathogens. The inexorable global expansion of marine shrimp farming generated by market demand has brought with it ineffective intensive farming systems, increased uncontrolled nomadic farmers, sociological disputes, loss of water quality, and disease in many shrimp farming countries (Early Mortality Syndrome in particular).
Royal Caridea’s Highly Disruptive Technology Based Solution
Royal Caridea has developed commercial scale Super Intensive Raceway Shrimp Farming Technology (SIRSFT), a true disruptive technology. SRSFTMIPT is designed to increase shrimp aquaculture production levels from a maximum of <7 kg/m2/yr to >100 kg/m2/yr of water footprint, an increase of more than ten times the current shrimp farming methods. This increase in production is made possible by research showing shrimp can be grown in shallow water along with feed formulations for better utilization under high stocking densities resulting in higher survival rates and growth. In addition, shrimp are grown in biosecure facilities (free of common shrimp pathogens), therefore, having no need for antibiotics (some toxic to humans) as commonly employed by Asian and Latin American aquaculture farmers (nitrofurans, chloramphenicol, etc.). SIRSFT also eliminates social and environmental problems associated with shrimp aquaculture especially as practiced in many parts of southeast Asia in particular.
The practice of SIRSFT will result in sustainable shrimp production with minimal environmental impact. The result is the daily production of a high quality, high yield product of marketable shrimp at locations close to customers with a focus on sustainable shrimp production using an environmentally conscientious production approach.
